Does ITES enables new opportunities for young people in India?  [26/8/2003 09:07:50]

Hello all,

I'm a graduate student from University of Helsinki Finland and I'm preparing my Master's thesis on the topic of IT Enabled Services in India. I'm interest to hear (especially from those people who works in Call Centers or in BPO operations):

1. Has this work affect your social life?
2. Is there any family pressure against to the women who works in the night shift?
3. Has this new lifestyle transformed family structures?

I would greatly appreciate all answers!

Kati

Hi Kati,

Few of my observations below shall answer some of your questions.

1. Many state legislatures have enacted laws that legalize night-shift working of women.Earlier women were not allowed to be employed in full night shifts.

2. The social life of call centre workers is affected as majority of call centres work for US clients thus forcing them to work between 6pm and 10am Indian Time(rest of the time the call centre resources are idle in majority of the centres). These workers have rotational offs and irregular

3. The salary expectations of the entry level agents ( fresh college graduates and under grads.)has gone up considerably and their spending on materialistic possessions has gone up ( Good news for many industries). They jump companies for few bucks more and call centres poach talent by offering better wages.

4. The burnout rates are increasing and attrition levels are increasing.

5. Talent acquisition at entry levels for other industries has become difficult as majority of these industries can't afford even 50% of the Salary what ITES industry is offering.

6. Greatly affected the psyche of these neo-rich immature young generation
