Restaurant and Pub Recommendations for Bristol?  [24/10/2006 16:32:57]

Hi all.

Next week I am being sent on a one day seminar thing in Bristol city centre. I'm travelling down the night before, and staying over. I've never been to Bristol before, and wondered where to eat. Nothing too extravagant. Also would be keen to hear a pub recommendation or two.

Ta,

John

Y'alright my luvvveerrr....  [24/10/2006 19:30:10]

...where's e too?

Bristol? That's one way to get a decent nights sleep John!

My personal fav is Hotel Du Vin, but it fits into the extravagent category. So too do Deasons and Lords (difficult to find, under the wetherspoons of all places).

For reasonable, SpyGlass (boat on the river) is quite good - but you only really get the choice of BBQ'd meat and chips. Mud Dock is cool and relaxed, and very fun to be eating above a bike shop. I understand that these days it may have become a little overated (and overpriced?)

Curry is a difficult one - I believe that Kashmiri Nights round the back of the Hippodrome is the best, and it adheres to the principle that the quality of the food is inversely proportionaly to the quality of the decor.

As for pubs....I've never been a fan of most of the city centre pubs, although to be fair it's probably because I've frequented them all too much over the years. The trendy bars like Severnshed and Riverstation have a nice relaxed atmosphere. You used to be able to get a decent pint in the Fuller's place down the end of Baldwin Street - but then as a Londoner I'm biased!

For a summers night, you can't beat the Cottage Inn. Decent beer sitting out by the water...nice. Decor's not so good, so you might want to give it a miss in the Winter. If you're over that side, then a trip down to the Coronation in Southville is always worth it and they serve *excellent* beer.

Now that's not to be confused with the Coronation Tap. It's up Clifton way (and full of students) but the "Exhibition" cider has to be tasted, even if it's only to say that you once drunk something that tasted like a cross between Apple Juice and Anti-freeze. Lethal and only served in half pints.

I'm sure Jason will disagree with everything I say....!

Actually, I'm sure there used to be a pub down CCT's road that did good beer and good food....

For Swindon this time,

I don't fancy a whole week eating in the hotel.
