Parenthood...  [8/5/2006 09:12:16]

Hi folks.

In a few months, I'm going to be a dad for the first time. A big life-changing adventure about to begin. It's exciting, scary and bewildering all at once - I mean, how much for baby stuff? I will not only be a first time dad, I will be skint!

Just wondered if anyone else has been through this recently (Zoe, I know you have) and I'd love to hear any advice/tales/warnings/etc.

Excited yet a bit scared John!

baby stuff  [8/5/2006 10:40:30]

Congratulations!

You don't need buy as much stuff as you think (eg do you really need a basinet, swinging crib and a cot?) and if you shop around, there are some good deals. http://www.kiddicare.com/ was cheapest for most things I found. And everybody you know will buy the baby an outfit or a toy, so just get a few basics to start with and then see what you didn't get. I didn't need buy my daughter any clothes until she was 18m. And buy a baby magazine. You get some good offers in them.

The best baby sites for info that I found are:

http://www.babycentre.co.uk/
http://www.babyworld.co.uk/
http://www.dontdropthebaby.com/
http://www.netmums.com
http://www.pampers.co.uk

and it's worth registering for the updates and newsletters.

It's also worth reading some books about babies (rather than pregnancy) before the baby arrives. I found it easier dealing with issues having thought about my approach beforehand. My favourite books were the NCT series, such as Help your Baby to Sleep, as rather than advocating one strategy, they gave you a range for what suited you best.

Think about childcare now - baby places are limited. http://www.childcarelink.gov.uk/ is a good place to start.

The first few weeks are the hardest, but you will get joined up sleep again - honest!

I love being a mam - it's far better than I even dared to hope. In the best possible way, I can't imagine a time when this little person who is the best bits of both of us didn't exist.

Hope this is some help - feel free to ask me my opinion on anything!

Congratulations John!  [8/5/2006 15:18:27]

My daughter is now 9Mths old and i agree with most of what zoe has said, I found it best to decide what we would need before she was born, then buy each item required rather than all items available.

My one main tip that really works is a travel cot, Basically i can deassemble/assemble this in approx 2 mins, this is ideal if you stay away from home, but also doubles as a bed whilst at home, if you also get one that has a high and low bed setting, it stays useful even when they start to walk.

But if you have any specific q's chuck up a post and we'll give you some answers
