Let's play poker ! ! !  [10/4/2006 19:53:03]

Alright people,

So I am organizing a poker night at work here, probably about 75 people or so, maybe 60 people playing.

Here is how it will work

8 tables will start, those tables play 60-90 minutes.

The winner of that table wins a poker set.

Intermission, food, prizes, etc then occur.

After that we take the winners of all those tables and play a second game, winner wins...something bigger...

Now..here comes some of the problems I forsee.

I want it to be a fun game, I want people fooling around and nobody taking it super seriously.

(there will be a prize for best "poker getup")

The problem is I can't force people to play 3 hours of poker...so I really have to control the length of the game.

I am thinking for the 1st game I will enforce a rule of "10 hands" and then count chips after that. It would make the game about an hour and would even the playing field a bit for pro vs amateur.

For the second game I was thinking of introducing a "increase blinds" every 20 minutes until it's over. Played till last man standing.

It would be texas hold'em.

What do you guys think? How should I control the time of the games? Any thoughts? Who here likes poker?

A note of caution  [10/4/2006 20:05:56]

I love poker (obviously).

You dont state if its for play money or real money. I'd beware associating it with work at all. Its against many people's religions and moral values, it is after all gambling.

Increasing the blinds is the quickest way of sorting it out.

Not for any money.  [10/4/2006 20:27:42]

No money is involved, just the prizes I mentioned.

We will probably make it so that $5 of play money will enter you into a draw for another prize too...that way people who don't want to play can just do that.

Of course, there will probably be side tables were the money play could start up, but that won't be endorsed by us.
