Name and Shame [8/2/2006 16:54:43]
Well... I thought at least the BASIC message was out there! I've just had a call from Per-Fit Windows in Nth Manchester EDIT: Please see note below for follow up after contacting company concerned. "Hello can I talk to the householder please?" SNIP SALES PITCH...... On asking where they got the number I was asked if this one was X-Directory, on confirming it was and asking where they got the number I was told. "We've just got printed up lists and are working through them." No idea of what TPS is (never heard of it apparently!!!!) or DMA guidelines/regs No manager I could speak to. However, they were helpful with a full name and address etc... Now, what do I do? Report to DMA? Ring them and ask to speak to the Telecoms manager? Stress test their phone lines? Opinions? I'm in shock. DaveA

TPS [8/2/2006 17:30:53]
The fine abuse of the TPS only come into effect when you have already had several violations and would be £5000 per varified complaint there after. I dont believe to my knowledge anyone has every been fined though. I would be more interested in where they got the peaces of paper from that had you phone number on as that is a data protection issue and much more serious. You could spend hours on it and get seriously annoyed but if you pursued this there could be something in it. Jason

On all Manchester pre-fixes? [8/2/2006 19:16:23]
I think that's illegal too. In fact, it may be considered worse than the TPS violation. Come on Dave: I've seen you chase around spammers based offshore. I'm really expecting you to do something special with these guys!

What we need.. [8/2/2006 19:44:35]
Is the telecoms version of the DDOS (Distribured Denial of Service). Where hundreds if not thousands of computers all access to the website at the same time. Oh come to think of it I had this in my last job, where a miss timed reminder letter went out and 2 days later the phone lines experienced a 10 fold increase in incoming calls.
Equal and opposite [8/2/2006 20:01:15]
Paul, That's kind of what I meant by stress testing the lines :-) I'm really expecting you to do something special with these guys! I was planning on a quiet phone call tomorrow. DaveA
TPS at Telco level [9/2/2006 15:46:41]
This appears to be an inadvertant dial with TPS being done at the Telco Deny level and missing one :-) Fantastic response from the company in dealing with the issue! Well done to them!!! DaveA

Nice one [10/2/2006 16:11:04]
Glad to hear it - and nice to hear in these times. As for a denial of service attack - what you would need is a predictive dialler.....
