Improving VOIP based call centres.........  [20/12/2006 10:49:04]

This is rahul from lucknow , we are currently running a 20 seater outbound call centre in Lucknow, India(bound to U.K) . We are using VOIP technology on MPLS alongside voice compression codecs g.729 , linksys VOIP PAP2 adapters, normal analog phones, & a soft predictive dialer installed on the server.

RF antenna (for MPLS link) is connected to our server via a cisco router.

I read some post on this very forum which stated that better quality can be extracted from VOIP based centers if we cast away compression softwares & gateways , it will be of great help if any1 of u over here can throw a bit more light on this concept.

Improving VoIP  [22/1/2007 06:47:41]

Hi Rahul,

Most compression is "lossy" and therefore you expect degradation of quality in return for lower bandwidth. Depending on the codec used this will be to a different degree, but in theory you'll always get better quality if the codec does not involve compression.

Another factor to consider is that any equipment used to code or decode the voice needs to have sufficient processing power to do so. If it does not, perhaps because it is overloaded, then you may see latency which could be perceived as bad quality.

However if you remove compression and you don't have sufficient bandwidth then you'll more than likely find that the quality will go do because of this. Therefore you need to balance all of these factors.

Perhaps you could switch to an alternative codec. If you use Google you should be able to find a lot of information about the codecs available and their relative merits.

Regards,
Darryl

Consider this, i bet you are using asterisk right?

now I think what you need to do is to increase your bandwidth/or find a less jittery ISP.

as for codecs, if you are using g729, you need to have a powerful server for it.
