Wish me luck...   [18/6/2004 13:06:29]

Hiya folks.

Wish me luck, as tonight I'm taking part in my first ever running race. Now, anyone who knows me will know that I am to running what Bin Laden is to world peace, so finishing the five or so miles of the race will be one hell of an achievement for me.

The race is the Black Rock 5, and is basically a five-or-so mile run starting in the coastal village of Kinghorn, up a hill for half a mile or so then downhill onto the beach, running across the sandbanks at low tide for a couple of miles, round a rock (with the possibility of ankle+ depth water - note to self: wear wellies ;-) and back to the village, with a one mile gentle uphill slope culminating in a rather nasty little hill. Ending up in a pub, whereby presentation of my number will earn me a bottle of beer and maybe a banana.

This will be a first for me, so come 8pm tonight, if everyone can keep their fingers crossed for me, I'll try to finish in around 42 minutes or better*.

John

* To be frank I have no clue how quickly I'll do, so I figured double the race record would be a fair guess. At least it's something to aim at. I'll be trying to keep up with my old uni mate Chris, who'll be trying to show me just how unfit I really am by finishing his bottle-of-beer by the time I finish...

Just 'cause...  [18/6/2004 14:24:59]

Just because it's there to be done.

7mph  [18/6/2004 17:16:03]

You would need to run a little over 7 mph to do this in 42 mins.

Good luck!

So?  [21/6/2004 13:42:51]

I was going to wish you luck but since you've by now finished it seems a little late!

So instead I'll ask "how did you do?"

Roger

Brave but tough...  [21/6/2004 14:07:02]

I managed a smidgeon under 45 minutes for the 5 mile course. I'd have been delighted with a quicker time but the reality was that running across sand and through pools of water saps energy and I found it tough going.

Next year, though, well, that's another story!
