Euro 2004  [9/6/2004 13:40:11]

With the great swathes of unfounded expectancy and mounting excitement that currently sweep this great nation, (please let John Terry's hamstring heal before Sunday!), it got me wondering about the coming month.

Not only in England, (and to some extent territories within the UK), but also abroad, the pending European Championship is likely to cause a great deal of interest amongst both call centre agents and the customers whom they serve.

Have any of our members and\or the organisations they work for made special provisions for their staff to ensure that they can catch the matches they want to watch? Or conversely has there been an edict from on high that all absentees will be treated sceptically and harshly if they take 'sick' leave on specific days?

(I appreciate that it is not as like the last World Cup in Japan and South Korea when games kicked off during office hours but since some of the group games, (and crucially the England Switzerland match), kick off at 5pm I imagine there will be some impact).

I recall one financial institution said that all staff could take time off to watch the England games providing a), they made up the lost time later; and b), they didn't come into work drunk! I know of other call centres where the plasma screens previously used as wall boards for real-time Management Information, had all the games on so that staff could watch and still work. One or two call centres actually broadcast real-time feeds onto Windows Media Player so the agents could watch via their own desk-top PC.

Also, what affect has there been on forecasting and scheduling for call flow? Has your operations team made special arrangements for if \ when England (or the country in which you operate\take calls for), make it through to the next round? What impact are you expecting?

Just thought it might be an interesting and topical thread to start!

P.S. Come on In-ger-land!

I've adopted...  [9/6/2004 16:02:06]

...Sweden as my Euro 2004 country to support. It will be good to see Larsson showing what he can do once again, and with some luck he'll be up there with the top scorers...

How about:

Once Annual Leave allocation full, facilitate shift swaps with those not interested in the beautiful game.

Then, for people who must work:

Provide a tv in a nice area. Have a big pile of take away menus available, or even lay on pizzas and pop for everyone!

Work out how many people you can afford off phones (bearing in mind call volumes tend to plummet during these things - can you use historic from teh World Cup to help?)

People request to be off phones during the match, on the understanding they make the time up.

If you have more requests than slots, names out of a hat (or contraversial, on last months' performance league....)

Or ask the staff themselves for suggestions. They will understand that not everyone can be off, but are more likely to acceptthis without strops and tantrums if they can be a little involved in the planning.

It all becomes clear!  [9/6/2004 17:00:28]

John - you reveal too much! Now we know where you club allegiances lie. On a slightly separate issue, I did think that you, (along with most of 'Ecosse'), would have adopted Les Bleus as 'their' team. Well at least for the weekend.

By the way, I dug out some of my old football related CDs this morning for the drive into work and found "the Big Man and the Scream Team meet the Barmy Army uptown", which was a song that Primal Scream and Irvine Welsh recorded for Euro '96 - highly offensive but highly amusing too. (I was actually looking for "England's Irie" by Black Grape, Joe Strummer and Keith Allen at the time. Still can't seem to find "World in Motion" by New Order yet. Must keep looking!).

Zoe - I like some of the ideas you mention. One thing that I would mention though is that I have sometimes found that by opening up to suggestions from the agents you may open deeper divisions amongst agents and\or between agents and management. The reason being that agents A, B and C give their recommendations, Manager X reviews them and accepts agent C's ideas as the best way forward. Agents A and B feel that their ideas are not valued or that agent C has been treated as a favourite and this can then produce a degree of resentment.

I'd really like to hear what our colleagues across Europe, (and the rest of the World), are expecting and subsequently making arrangements for. Especially if these colleagues are located in or take calls for customers from other competing nations.

As a great man once said "Eat my Goal!"

he shoots, he scores  [10/6/2004 10:38:44]

Well I predict the top scorers at the forthcoming tournament will likely be
1/ Dado Prso
2/ Peter Lovenkrands
3/ Alain Boumsong, and I cannot think of any others that will be in the picture at the moment.

Whilst there will not be as much of a rush for agents to ask for time off to watch the England games in Scotland, the good news for many companies and my own included is that more people will be at home, hit rates are likely to rise and although the conversation may be a little "hostile", especially after Thierry's 3rd, I'd hope that the football will bring a more productive time for contact centres that need to get in touch with people. I dont think its strictly the case that no-one will answer. Anyway good luck to Sven, Anders Svensson that is ;-)

Gary.

Euro 2004  [10/6/2004 12:33:07]

Top scorers

Fernando Torres (Spain)
Deco (Portugal)
Henry (France)

Simple choice as I predict a better tournament for France and with the service Henry will get he is bound to score loads of goals.

Torres is one to watch and this could be his coming of age he is an excellent young striker rated at £30 million & beat Reyes for the spare slot.

Deco (goals from midfield) because Portugal will win the tournament even thought they don't have great strikers.

Predictions

England go out to Portugal in the quarter finals (England always go out to the eventual winners) France will play Portugal in the final and Portugal will win.

I am also glad someone mentioned that the Swiss game is an early kick off as I hadn't thought of it and will be covering it off with the boss later.

You cannot be serious!  [11/6/2004 12:23:01]

No. No. No. No. No.

The leading goal scorers will be;

Milan Baros (Czech Republic)
Francesco Totti (Italy) and
Michael Owen (England) - I have to include this one really!

I would also imagine that Antonio Cassano might well nab a good few for the Azzurri too.

Incidentally, talking of the tournament's impact on Call Centres, I was speaking with a centre manager this week whose company works within the travel industry. They commented that their call volumes were relatively low for this time of year and they expected that they would remain so until England exited, (or won), the tournament. From past experiences this would then mean that their call volumes would actually rise quite sharply from this point onwards.

With this in mind, I wondered what effect there would be across all call centre sectors in the (possibly unlikely) event that England actually do win the tournament. Would this result in a big drop in calls as people take time out to celebrate, or would call volumes increase as people become more liberal with their cash on the back of an associated "Feel good" factor.

Your thoughts, comments, personal experience?

Euro 2004  [11/6/2004 14:19:22]

Milan Baros is playing for a great team who could be outsiders for a Cup win but he is just not good enough, sorry if your a pool fan.

Italy are far to defensive to have a leading goal scorer so Totti will score just not enough.

Micheal Owen that gives the Liverpool connection away, he has been rubbish all season (as have Liverpool) and the only reason he is starting is because he is Micheal Owen. I would of been tempted to start with Smith & Rooney but obviously the Swede knows best.

Sorry if I dont end this with a call centre angle.

A Red! How dare you!  [11/6/2004 15:25:03]

Jason,

No mate. Not a Red by any stretch of the imagination. No allegiance to any team within the Premiership, my team operates at a much, much lower level!

The reason Milan Baros? He's scored 13 goals in 23 games many of which he's started on the bench, (in fact I think this total now may be 15 in 24 as he scored 2 the other night in the Czech Republic's final warm-up game).

The reason for Francesco Totti? He was Roma's top goal scorer last season with 15 goals from 24 games and was amongst the leading goal scorers in Serie A last season. All this from a midfield player. When he is on form he is something else to watch and can produce truly magical football from almost anywhere on the pitch. If he's couples with Cassano, it's even better.

And the reason for Owen? I'm an English man and have to be patriotic\optimistic, don't I?

Football thread  [14/6/2004 13:09:06]

Moved to After hours: DA 14/6/2004

On that note!

The DSA[1] and DOT [2] are now rolling out across the country a trial of new legislation that will enable ordinary drivers to readily identify drivers of low IQ who, by the nature of their lack of brain power, are a potential hazard to other road users. Drivers with sub-normal IQ's will be required to display a
visual indicator or their stupidity affixed prominently to their vehicles.

This indicator will consist of a white square of plastic with a red
horizontal/vertical warning cross, in some cases the word "England" will be
imprinted on the indicator to remind the driver of the car where they live.
The indicator may be affixed to a small pole jammed into a window or
displayed prominently from a car aerial, in cases of gross stupidity more
than one indicator will be required. In extreme cases the abode of the
driver may also be identified by a much larger indicator draped from a
window.

This trial is going on now and is scheduled to last for the rest of June and
possibly longer. The uptake of this new indicator scheme has been quite good
to-date with moronic drivers buying into the scheme in their thousands, the
self selection element of this trial is making it particularly effective. We
hope that the vast majority of ordinary drivers are finding the scheme
beneficial in aiding with the identification of morons on the roads.

He he he

Good luck ENGLAND  [17/6/2004 21:37:32]

3-0 good result. I wondered while I sat at work this evening (3 till 10 but I got a TV)why my company advertises on TV at half both half and full time and why those in the know let each of our locations manage staff having time off for the match locally rather than managing it centrally? I'm not thinking too much about this as I'm watching the french drawing :-)

True but...  [21/6/2004 13:48:45]

...let's not mention the Totti 'gob'-gate incident shall we? What a let-down! the guy is a genius and reduces himself to the level of a plebian! Still Cassano has been playing well so at least that bit of my prediction is still valid! Not sure I can excuse the Michael Owen prediction though, that does appear to have been a flight of fancy doesn't it? Perhaps he will prove all the doubters wrong tonight, (fingers crossed).

Still think that the Czechs and Milan Baros in particular could go all the way. Wish I'd put a few quid on them both now. Ho-hum.

Not sure if the nations call centres experienced similar impacts but the traffic in and around Leeds on Thursday afternoon between about 3.30pm and 6pm was apparently dreadful. One person I know claimed that they took almost 1 hour to travel around 2 miles, I think a lot of people missed kick-off because of things like this. Not sure if other parts of the country we similarly affected but I imagine that call flows plummeted between 5pm and 7pm. Same again tonight I'd wager between 7:45pm and 9pm.

To all those unfortunate people who have to miss the game due to working in a call centre; my sincerest, heart-felt sympathies. I have been there and it is not nice. Let's just hope it is a resounding victory with Rooney steering clear of cards of any colour and we get through comfortably. At least Piereluigi Colina is the referee so at least we have a fighting chance.

Please don't make it a repeat of Charleroi 2002! Please don't play Phil "Albert Steptoe" Neville! Please don't perform a suicidal back pass in the 93rd minute!

My predictions are still to come fruition, I didnt know Henry hadnt score for France since last October. The so called wonder boy Torres was terrible last night (and is now out of the competition) and Deco seems to be marked off the pitch every time he plays.

I think I will be lucky to catch up with the 2 you already have in the bag.

My preditcions for tonight, England 2 Crotia 2.
