The Chicken or the Egg  [1/5/2003 18:10:47]

I'm a small business owner in DC who is looking to set up a call center in India to outsource customer service calls, etc. for businesses in the area. But I'm not sure whether I should line up funds, location, etc, and then try to get corporate clients, or whether I should begin to line up clients in anticipation of setting up the call center. I have people in India who could manage the center for me, so this is not a problem.

Any advice? And how could I convince clients to use my call center if it doesn't exist yet?

Can relate  [1/5/2003 19:53:04]

Great job in trying out the call centre biz friend. As I have gone through this learning curb as well, one phrase stands out " build it , and they will come" at first I thought that if we could land the corporate clients first then begin operations with a deposit or what have you, that would work right? not all the time. I looked at a minimum cost to a max cost on small seaters and large and it all boils down to the same thing, INFRASTRUCTURE first! assess how many seats you can afford to fund yourself for a month ahead because this business calls for lot's of hardware and phone service that takes time to acquire or provision, i.e. if you have a client who says yes I'll use your services and you don't have the phone lines provisioned for multiple usage, that can take anywhere from 3 weeks to a month here in Canada, which means that you have no phone service to offer your client your service ;) we learned a valuble lesson in having at a month ahead in the bank to cover any unforeseen happenings. Hope this helps
Wish you success

IT is true....  [3/5/2003 16:14:49]

I definitely agree with Brian Jenkins. Except for a few cases where the clients fund the project as a JV/Understanding, in all other cases it is best to first have a callcenter that is operational. This gives the client to place some trust and gives them a chance to evaluate your center to outsource their order.
From Our persoanl experience so far, we feel that most of the orders that Land India, reach in a stage where it has to be taken by the callcenter here within a matter of few days. So to get the order is to first have the necessary setup. Now to the other important areana, uman resources. Most of the clients before giving the Trial would really like to know the HR capability of the company. so this is possible only and only if you have a live call center .
